Shipping Process for Newfoundland Puppies

At Gentle Giants Newfoundland, we understand that many of our clients may be located far from us, and we’re committed to ensuring that your new Newfoundland puppy safely reaches your home no matter where you live. We take extra care in preparing your puppy for travel and ensuring a smooth, comfortable journey.

Below, we’ve outlined the Shipping Process so you know exactly what to expect when it comes to transporting your new puppy.

1. Preparation for Shipping

Before we ship a puppy, there are several important steps we take to ensure the health, safety, and comfort of your new companion:

  • Health Check and Vaccinations: Each puppy undergoes a thorough health check by a licensed veterinarian. They receive all age-appropriate vaccinations, deworming treatments, and a clean bill of health.
  • Microchip: All puppies are microchipped for identification purposes, in case they get lost during transport. This gives you peace of mind knowing your puppy is securely identified.
  • Shipping Carrier Selection: We work with reputable, experienced pet transport companies that specialize in safe and humane shipping for puppies. We ensure that your puppy will travel with comfort and care, whether by air or ground transportation.
  • Travel Crate: Your puppy will travel in a sturdy, airline-approved travel crate that provides ample space for movement and safety during transit. The crate will be labeled with your puppy’s information and necessary care instructions.

2. Shipping Options

We offer a few different shipping options depending on your location and preferences. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Air Travel:
We primarily use air travel to ship puppies over long distances, especially for international shipments. Air travel is the quickest and safest option for puppies traveling across the country or internationally. We ensure that your puppy travels in the cargo area of the plane where they are well-ventilated and comfortable.

    • Direct Flights: Whenever possible, we choose direct flights to minimize travel time and reduce stress on your puppy.
    • Flight Confirmation: Once your puppy’s travel plans are booked, you will receive detailed flight information, including departure and arrival times.
  • Ground Shipping:
For shorter distances or regional shipments, we can arrange for your puppy to be transported via specialized ground pet transport services. These transport services are equipped with climate-controlled vehicles and experienced handlers who ensure a safe journey for your puppy.

  • In-Person Pickup:
If you’re within driving distance of our location and prefer to pick up your puppy in person, we’re happy to arrange a pickup time. This gives you the opportunity to meet your puppy in person before taking them home.

3. Shipping Costs

Shipping costs vary depending on the delivery method, distance, and any special handling required. The buyer is responsible for the full cost of shipping, and we provide an estimate prior to booking. Below are some factors that influence the shipping price:

  • Air Travel: Costs for air travel vary by distance, the airline, and the size of the puppy. Typically, you can expect to pay between $300-$500 for domestic flights.
  • Ground Transport: Ground shipping costs are generally lower than air travel but still depend on the distance. Expect a cost range of $100-$300 for regional deliveries.
  • International Shipping: For international shipments, the cost of travel can be higher due to customs fees, quarantine requirements, and other international regulations. We will work with you to obtain the best rates for international shipping.

Note: All shipping fees, including crate, airline fees, and transportation costs, are the responsibility of the buyer. We will provide an invoice for these costs once the shipping is booked.

4. What to Expect Upon Arrival

When your Newfoundland puppy arrives, we want to ensure the process is as smooth as possible for both you and your new puppy:

  • Delivery Time: The delivery time will vary depending on the shipping method and distance. Air travel can take 1-3 days, while ground transport can take up to a week.
  • Arrival Inspection: Upon arrival, you should inspect the puppy immediately for any signs of stress or discomfort. It’s normal for puppies to be a bit tired after a long journey, but they should otherwise be in good health.
  • Post-Arrival Vet Check: We recommend scheduling a vet checkup within 72 hours of arrival to ensure your puppy’s health is as expected. If any health concerns arise, please contact us immediately.

5. Preparing for Your Puppy’s Arrival

We want to make sure your puppy’s transition is smooth and comfortable. Here are a few things you can do to prepare:

  • Home Setup: Have a safe, quiet space ready for your puppy to rest and acclimate. Make sure the area is puppy-proofed to avoid any potential hazards.
  • Food & Water: Have your puppy’s food ready (we will send you information on the current food they’re eating) and ensure fresh water is available at all times.
  • Travel Crate Setup: Once your puppy arrives, the travel crate will likely need to be introduced to your home environment. It’s their safe space for travel, so they may feel most comfortable resting in it initially.
  • Toys and Bedding: Provide soft bedding and a few toys to help your puppy feel secure and comfortable as they adjust to their new environment.

6. International Shipping (If Applicable)

If you’re adopting from outside of the country, the shipping process will be slightly more involved due to customs regulations and other international shipping requirements. We will guide you through the necessary steps and paperwork required to bring your puppy home. This includes:

  • International Health Certifications: A veterinarian’s health certificate is required for puppies traveling abroad. We will provide this document along with any other required paperwork.
  • Customs Fees & Import Regulations: Be aware that certain countries may have specific regulations, such as quarantine or import fees. We will help coordinate with you and the shipping company to make sure everything is in order.
  • Travel Time: International shipments can take longer (up to a week or more), so please allow time for customs clearance and transportation.

7. Shipping Contract

Once your puppy is ready to travel, we will provide you with a shipping contract outlining all the shipping details, costs, and timelines. This contract will need to be signed and returned prior to booking travel.
